Ponderings of a lifeguard

Ponderings of a lifeguard So the other day at work, I was sitting at the bottom of one of the water slides. And I was bored out of my mind. There were about 3 people in the entire park, and my entire job was to make sure that none of themI dont know, diedwhen they got off this particular slide. So I was just sitting there, trying to ignore the incessant Beach Boys music they play on loop the entire @#^?*! summer, watching the water cascade down the last 3 feet of the slide and crash into a continuous white spray at the bottom. And suddenly I wondered, why is it white? So I sat back in puzzlement and continued to stare at the water, thinking. I supposed that since the water was moving quickly, so this somehow scattered the light or kept it from being absorbed or from shining right through. But given the speed of the water coming down a slide and the speed of light, this seemed a little hokey. Besides, after crashing into the bottom, the water sprayed across the small pool and remained in its foamy white form as it drifted lazily towards the drain. Of course, the foam is really just a lot of little bubbles gathered together, but still if theres nothing in the water that is white, how does it suddenly turn white when it gets churned around a lot? Its a physical change, not a chemical change, so what gives? This has now been bothering me for over a week. Whenever Im at a spot with any kind of cascading water (which is about half of them) on a slow day, I find myself puzzling the many intricacies of turbulent flow, how it disrupts normal optics, and a million other little questions. But the big one, mainly, Why are white water rapids white? is really driving me nuts. If theres anything Ive learned by being a blogger this year, its that most of the incoming freshman are smarter than me. So Im sure some of you know the answer to this. Come on, help me out. In other news, I finally figured out how Ill be able to update my blog this summer! I feel so guilty for my prolonged silences, but unlike some of my counterparts who are traveling around Europe and doing other cool things, I spend every day staring a pool after pool of water, basically waiting for some major accident to happen. I dont have much to talk about. So aside from answering all of the questions that you guys arent asking me (*glare*), Ive decided to review books. See, reading is a huge part of my life. My mom used to beg me to put the book down and go outside. (My childhood is full of my mom begging/forcing me to do things that most parents beg/force their kids not to do. There are some funny stories in there.) One of the 3 million reasons I love the summer is because I finally have time off to just read. My mom is convinced that theres a cute guy who works at the library, because she cant figure out why else I would want to spend so much time there. Anyway, rest assured that I will spend the entire summer reading anything and everything I can get my hands on. Ive been known to walk down an aisle of the library and pick a random book off the shelf to read. Since this activity constitutes the most interesting thing Ill be doing all summer, I will blog about it. Im also open to reccomended reading (titles, topics, authors), so comment away. I know this is a lame way to blog all summer. So ask more questions. =P Also, while reading Mollies blog, I realized that today was my blog anniversary. My unoriginally named blog is exactly 1 year old. How cool is that?

Three Conferences That Created the Dominion of Canada

About 150 years ago the three British colonies of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island were considering the possibilities of joining together as a Maritime Union, and a meeting was set in Charlottetown, PEI for September 1, 1864. John A. Macdonald, then Premier of the Province of Canada (formerly Lower Canada, now Quebec, and Upper Canada, now southern Ontario) asked if representatives from the Province of Canada could also attend the meeting. The Province of Canada contingent showed up on the SS Queen Victoria, which was well supplied with champagne. That week Charlottetown was also hosting the first real circus Prince Edward Island had seen in twenty years, so accommodation for the last-minute Conference delegates was a bit short. Many stayed and continued discussions on board ship. The Conference lasted for eight days, and the topic rather quickly switched from creating a Maritime Union to building a cross-continent nation. The discussions continued through formal meetings, grand balls, and banquets and there was general approval for the idea of Confederation. The delegates agreed to meet again in Quebec City that October and then in London, United Kingdom to continue to work on the details. In 2014, Prince Edward Island commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference with celebrations all year long, across the entire province. The PEI 2014 Theme Song, Forever Strong, captures the mood. The Quebec Conference of 1864 In October 1864, all the delegates who had been present at the earlier Charlottetown Conference attended the conference in Quebec City, which simplified getting an agreement. The delegates worked out many of the details of what the system and structure of government for the new nation would be like, and how powers would be shared between provinces and the federal government. By the end of the Quebec Conference, 72 resolutions (called the Quebec resolutions) were adopted and became a substantial part of the British North America Act. The London Conference of 1866 After the Quebec Conference, the Province of Canada approved the union. In 1866 New Brunswick and Nova Scotia also passed resolutions for a union. Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland still refused to join. (Prince Edward  Island joined in 1873 and Newfoundland joined in 1949.)  Towards the end of 1866, delegates from the Province of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia approved the 72 resolutions, which then became the London resolutions. In January 1867 work began on drafting the British North America Act. Canada East would be called Quebec. Canada West would be called Ontario. It was finally agreed that the country would be named the Dominion of Canada, and not the Kingdom of Canada. The bill got through the British House of Lords and the House of Commons quickly, and received Royal Assent on March 29, 1867, with July 1, 1867, the date of the union. Fathers of Confederation Its confusing to try and figure out who the Canadian Fathers of Confederation were. They are generally considered to be the 36 men representing the British colonies in North America who attended at least one of these three major conferences on Canadian confederation.

Power Essay Free Essays

Power Definition Essay Power is a strong word and really very hard to define, it is a very vast term, but I guess that’s the point of the word isn’t it. Power can be anything from love to death or even electrical power; it’s all about how you view the term on a personal level. Two types of power that are commonly thought about when people are put on the spot and asked the question â€Å"what is Power? † are social/political power and power used in physics. We will write a custom essay sample on Power Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now For the obvious reasons that I don’t know too much about physics; this essay will boarder around more of the social and political aspect of power. So the question still stands â€Å"what is power? † On a personal note, to me power is a social/political level in which you can control an influence people. A way I also perceive this same idea of power is that the higher of the level you have the easier it becomes for them to control and influence the public with littler resistance. For example look at the president of the United States many people love him and he can almost do anything he wants; though you might say that many people also don’t like him this is because of a comparison, he runs against others for office so there are some contrasting factors. For me I can easily see power in everyday life, although it may not be how I view power when I picture it in my head. A way that I often see on a daily basis is direct control over someone else. Some example of this may include your teacher failing you if you do not do what they ask or a personal and ongoing one for me is my mother threatening to not let me go to see my favorite band in the summer unless I do everything she asks, and believe me the list gets daunting. Often people relate power to symbols, words, phrases or even colours. When I did my power survey some of the answers that I got were lightning bolt, fist, peace sign, and groups of people. The lightning bolt was the most popular ones, I have spoken with my classmates and this was a popular one, I think this is a popular choice because it can represent different kinds of power leaving multiple impressions on people. Some political figures can be viewed as very powerful people because they can control mass amounts of people for better or for worse; this includes people like JFK and Hitler. Colour can make a huge impact and difference on people when presenting something this is why on my poster I tried to pay attention of the meaning of the colours while still rying to make it look as good as it does. For myself I view red and black as two very important colours because they both have very strong meanings that have both impacted my life significantly. In conclusion I still believe and proceed to see power as a social and political level that you can use to control or influence people on a positive or negative way. If you are looking to gain more power in your life, or jus t control and understand what you got going for you I suggest looking into powerful quotes, symbols and colours that can help you find your own impression of power. The Bald Eagle as an Endangered Species Essay Example For Students

The Bald Eagle as an Endangered Species Essay The bald eagle is the most well known endangered species because it is the nations symbol. It is suppose to stand for freedom and the American way, but if we allow the bald eagle to become extinct how can we let something that doesnt exist anymore stand for freedom and the American way. Being the symbol of the nation, the bald eagle was put on the endangered species list faster than most species. When the bald eagle reached its low point in the 1960s (400 pairs), it was put on the endangered species list. The many federal acts or programs, the Endangered Species Act being the most effective, that were created for the bald eagle show how much the government cares about the symbol of our nation. We will write a custom essay on The Bald Eagle as an Endangered Species specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now There are four major reasons why the bald eagle is an endangered species. The first reason why the bald eagle became an endangered species is the pesticide DDT. This pesticide is a major reason because the pesticide did not really affect the eagles who absorbed the pesticide, but the pesticide made the shells of the eggs too soft. Because the shells were soft the eggs could not make it until they were ready to be hatched. Frank Melino 2 Graham Jr., the author of the article Winged Victory, states that: The species continued a steady decline into the 1950s, when its extirpation south of Canada came close to reality. Protective laws were by then no help. Evidence began to build that DDT and other long-lived insecticides, made available to the public after World War II, were draining off of heavily sprayed farms and forests and contaminating aquatic food chains. Living at the top of those food chains, bald eagles accumulated the toxins in their tissues. (2) Graham makes the point that the that the pesticide DDT is a reason for the bald eagle becoming an endangered species by expressing the fact that the pesticide DDT affects the eggs of the eagles. Since it affects the eggs, the population of the eagles suffer, and the bald eagle gets closer to becoming endangered species. The bald eagle came dangerously close to extinction from eating fish that had been poisoned with the pesticide DDT. The birds that did not die immediately after eating the either could not reproduce or the shells of the eggs it laid were so thin that the babies could not survive (Cessina B. Cornella 51). Cornella focuses on the point that sometimes the eagle will die from the pesticide itself. When an eagle dies, it not only lowers the population by one, but it also lowers it by how many offspring the eagle would had, therefore, pushing the bald eagle closer to becoming an endangered species. Melino 3 The second reason why the bald eagles became an endangered species is hunting. Before the bald eagle was declared an endangered species, they were hunted as any other animal was. Despite being the symbol of the nation, the eagles were still considered a nuisance and were shot on sight. This ignorance brought the bald eagle closer to becoming an endangered species. Historically, Americans treated their nations symbol about as well as they did their other natural resources. Recent guesstimates of eagle numbers at the time of European settlement range from 25,000 to 75,000 birds, though the species distribution was spotty. Feeding largely on fish and carrion, and thus harmless to human interest, bald eagles were nevertheless classed as vermin, to be shot on sight.
